The Global Health Academy at the University of Edinburgh and Cairdeas International Palliative Care Trust are hosting a one day workshop on global perspectives for palliative care. The Global Health Academy and Cairdeas International Palliative Care Trust, together with PRIME will explore the key issues in current global palliative care. Themes will cover integration, universal coverage, mentorship, spiritual care, education and children.

Everyone with an interest in Palliative Care is welcome to the (no cost) event which includes a buffet lunch and a “Cairdeas purple tea and coffee party”.

Dr Liz Grant is Assistant Principal and Director of the Global Health Academy. She is responsible for a wide range of inter-disciplinary on-line global health programmes, co-directs the new Masters in Family Medicine and the MSc Global Health Non Communicable Diseases, and is a lead within the new MSc Global Challenges. Her research portfolio covers global palliative care, faith and health intersections, primary health care training and mhealth in low income countries. She previously worked for the Scottish Government as Health Advisor in the International Development Team, for NHS Lothian Public Health Directorate as a specialist in international health. In the 1990s Liz was based in Kenya working as a Community Health Advisor. She is a passionate proponent of equitable accessible palliative care especially for those in low and middle income countries, leading the DFID/THET funded programme called Integrate, which aims to integrate palliative care into the health systems in Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia and Kenya

Dr Mhoira Leng is the Medical Director of Cairdeas, Head of Makerere University Palliative care Unit (MPCU), Kampala and a Consultant Palliative Care Physician holding speciality accreditation within the UK. She has been involved with international palliative care since 1998 in Africa, Eastern Europe and India; which she first visited in 1999 and continues to work alongside partners including Pallium India, Guwahati Pain and Palliative Care Society and Emmanuel Hospitals Association. She is a mentor to the International Leadership Development Initiative, honourary academic in Edinburgh University and board member of the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care, and with MPCU is working with Liz Grant (University of Edinburgh) and the African Palliative Care Association to build capacity for PC in 12 hospitals hubs in 4 African countries (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Zambia) through the DFID/THET funded grant.

Malcolm McNeil is a Senior Health Adviser in DFID and has worked on programmes in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Before joining the Research and Evidence Division in DFID, Malcolm was the Team Leader of the AIDS and Reproductive Health Policy Team. He has worked on NGO health programmes in Kenya and was also the International Director for Tearfund. Malcolm's background is in health education, community development and international public health.
